Entering the Yukon Territory on the Alcan Highway, one can't miss a series of signs posted along the side of the road. You can't miss it because there are over 77,000 of them!
In 1942, a US soldier named Carl K. Lindley spent time in Watson Lake while recovering from an injury. A commanding officer instructed him to repair and erect the directional signposts and while completing the job, he added a sign that indicated the direction and mileage to his hometown of Danville, Illinois. Others followed suit, and the trend caught on.
Other than the sign posts, I only noticed mosquitos!
