This past July, while riding up the California coast on our start of the Pan-American Expedition, we ran into major communication issues with our GMRS setup. We were using third-party radios paired with the Rugged Radios Motorcycle Communication Kit, and after hours of frustration, we finally pulled over to regroup. On a whim, we checked where Rugged Radios’ corporate office was located—expecting it to be far out of reach. To our surprise (and good fortune), it was only about an hour away, right along our route! After a quick call, they welcomed us to stop by and see if they could help.

Lace, their tech manager, spent nearly 45 minutes troubleshooting with us. Even though we weren’t using Rugged Radios’ own units, he went above and beyond to help us narrow down the problem. Thanks to his effort, our system worked flawlessly for the rest of the trip.

We had originally chosen a different radio system because we needed a fully waterproof option. That said, we’re hopeful Rugged Radios will release a fully waterproof handheld in the future so we can make the switch. In the meantime, we’ll be running a Rugged Radios mobile unit in our upcoming support vehicle.
